the warning mentioned by the other buyer is usually on older versions of the cup and it is there because CA has really strict standards. It meets the standards of a safe drinking cup int he other 49 states.

I bought this mug, and some others like it for my son....a huge John Wayne fan! He loves using it....won't drink coffee out of anything else!

Unlike most souvenir products, this mug is really well made. The picture and text of the quote are clear and sharp. The very nice, brown-themed background extends around the entire outside surface including the handle. The mug is well glazed and looks like it will last a lifetime. The inside has not been neglected. It too has a light brownish color to match the outside, and John Wayne's autograph (a replica) appears inside, just below the rim. The mug is dishwasher and microwave safe. If you are right-handed, the funny quote faces out. So if you take it to the office, it can be an ice-breaker in meetings and at the communal coffee maker. Update on 22 Aug 2010: still in daily use and still looks like new even after more than a year. I am pleased with it. UPDATE 13 MARCH 2012: I am still using this mug daily, and it looks like new... no fading. It still gets lots of laughs and comments.

I'll start with an embarrassing confession. At a retail store in Manhattan, I paid $26 for this mug - about triple what it's selling for here! I had a nagging feeling that it would be available for less money online, but I was so amused by the mug that I decided to buy the overpriced one on the spot. So it goes...
Anyway. My more important point is, this mug is cool. The picture of John Wayne suits him well (he looks vaguely annoyed and quite iconic), and the quote on the opposite side of the mug ("Don't say it's a fine morning or I'll shoot ya") is hilarious. I also quite like the sepia presentation.
As an aside, I've been using this mug at work for the past couple of weeks; it has amused many of my co-workers, and gotten me some extra attraction (of the frivolous kind). Mission accomplished. :-)
Another reviewer noted that the mug has a "lead content" warning on it, but my version has no such warning. Still other reviewers have indicated that (a) this warning is only found on older versions of the mug; and (b) the lead content was only deemed dangerous according to the unusually strict standards of California. I have nothing to add to this debate, I just felt like summarizing it for no particular reason. I, for one, drink out of this mug without fear; if the lead doesn't get me in the end, I'm sure that something else will.
